To use the Inbox: Slack extension you will need to set up a slack app to receive the data from the Inbox for Jira extension.
Setup Slack app
The Slack app allows incoming messages from Inbox for Jira to your Slack workspace. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up a Slack App.
- Log in to Slack, click "Create a custom app" or "Create a new app" from the Your apps dropdown.
- Fill in the app details, ie. call it Inbox for Jira, choose your workspace
- Go to the "App Home" section, add a bot user by clicking "Edit"
- Fill in the bot user details, click "Add"
- Go to "OAuth & Permissions"
- Add the Bot token scope: chat:write to allow the bot to post to chats
- Install your app to your Slack workspace, click the "Install to workspace" button and grant access.
- From the OAuth & Permissions sections, copy your Bot User OAuth Token. This goes into the "Inbox for Jira" - admin settings.
Configure Inbox:Slack, Inbox for Jira Extension settings
In the manage apps section, click the "Inbox for Jira" settings.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and fill in your Slack OAuth Token copied from above into the "Setup Slack authorization token" - field, click "Save"
Once the token is installed the Inbox: Slack Extension will post chat messages to all users that have their Slack member Id filled in.
An admin can fill in a user member id by entering the Jira user id into the "User id" field, and the Slack Member Id into the "Member id" field and pressing save. This could also be used to clear a member id for a user. Just leave "member id" field blank and press "save"
User settings
All users that wish to receive Slack notifications must fill in their Slack member id into the Inbox for Jira settings page.
Find Slack member id:
- Go to "view full profile" in your Slack app (or on the Slack web page)
- Click the "more" button
- Member id is in the popup menu. Note it down.
Open Inbox for Jira settings
- Click the cogwheel icon to open the user settings page (bottom right corner)
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page
- Fill in the Slack member id, press save
